Protecting your skin from sun damage is no joke, especially in the summer months when we are spending more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather! When I lived in New Zealand a few years ago, I worked in a skin cancer screening center where my job was to package up the dermatologist’s reports and send them out to the patients. In that time, I sent out a LOT of reports that were advising patients to urgently visit their doctor for removal of a probable skin cancer. This experience definitely gave me a reality check about how common skin cancer is and got me wearing sunscreen much more regularly.
Since then, I’m forever on the hunt for sun care products that work seamlessly with my makeup while still providing the protection I need. This became especially difficult when I started my clean(er) beauty journey and learned how different active ingredients in sunscreen could really be doing more harm and good. I now choose mineral (physical) sunscreens over chemical sunscreens where possible. Today’s post is full of my picks for must have sun care products for summer, so let’s get into it!
ATTITUDE makes some of my favorite bath & body products (their Super Leaves hand soap in Orange Leaves smells so good), so I was super excited to try out their recently launched sun care line for adults. First of all, the packaging is gorgeous! The 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (made with non-nano zinc oxide) protects against UVA and UVB rays, is completely non-greasy and while it initially applies a little heavy feeling, it blends out quickly and doesn’t leave a white cast. It comes in three varieties: tropical (which I find to be very lightly scented), orange blossom and fragrance-free.
I have yet to use the fragrance-free 100% Mineral Face Stick because Cole claims every stick sunscreen that comes my way, haha. He hasn’t made any complaints about it though, so it must be pretty good! The face stick is formulated with olive oil, shea butter and cocoa butter to moisturize the skin and make application easier.
Another product I haven’t had a chance to try but am excited to have in my arsenal for this summer should I get a sunburn (I’m definitely hoping I don’t, but it happens to the best of us!) is the ATTITUDE After-Sun Melt-In Gel. It’s- you guessed it, haha- an after sun gel that helps to soothe, heal and refresh the skin using calendula extract as well as light mint and cucumber scents. It immediately feels cool and hydrating on the skin and smells very fresh.
Now these next couple of products aren’t specifically sun care, but they WILL help you avoid damaging your skin by spending too much time in the sun trying to get a tan! St. Tropez has been a go-to self tanning brand for me for years. Their products are innovative and almost always have worked well for me! I love trying out their latest releases as they consistently pave the way in the self tanning market.
The St. Tropez Gradual Tan Everyday Tinted Moisturizer & Primer and St. Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse are the latest additions to my self tanner product stash and I’ve found them both to be a great way to ease my pale winter skin into the summer. I really like applying a light layer of the Tinted Moisturizer & Primer underneath my foundation when the rest of my body is self tanned so that I don’t have to go out and buy a darker foundation. In addition to giving you a healthy bronze glow, it also gradually tans your face! The Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse is perfect for pale girls like myself as it takes a few uses to build up and therefore it won’t be a shock going from super pale to super tanned, haha. It does say one minute on it, but I personally keep it on for 10-15 mins before showering off.
I’ve got a few other skincare and makeup picks in here, too!
The One Love Organics Vitamin C Brightening Facial Serum is one of my favorite serums ever. It’s hydrating, brightening, and my skin always looks more even and healthy overall when I’m using this daily. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect from the sun’s rays as well as strengthen the skin so that it can provide it’s own line of defence against environmental stressors. Make sure you are still using sunscreen alongside a vitamin C serum though, as it’s not meant to replace it!
You guys have heard me complain about my dark circles a million times before, so the fact that I’ve found an eye cream that ALSO has SPF and ALSO gives some coverage? Sold. The Clarins Mission Perfection Eye is getting pleeeenty of use from me lately! The only thing is that I hate the brush applicator, but I’ll live.
The perfect pairing with the Clarins Mission Perfection Eye is the MyChelle Sun Shield Liquid Tint SPF 50. I LOVE this tinted sunscreen so, so much. A couple pumps of this all over my face, a little of the Clarins eye cream under my eyes, a swipe of mascara and brow gel and voila! I look like a whole new person! ;) This tinted sunscreen evens out my skin really well and even provides a bit of coverage, all while protecting my skin with SPF 50. My only complaint is that it only comes in two shades: a light/medium and medium/dark. I can make the light/medium work once I’ve got a little a bit of a tan going, but I would like to see a lighter shade so I could wear this year round!
For the days when I do want to do a full face of foundation, I’ll start by priming and protecting my skin with the Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer. It’s a thick consistency and gives off a little white cast at first, but that goes away and leaves a non-greasy finish once you blend it all in. This looks great under my makeup and makes my skin feel nice and hydrated.
Don’t forget about your lips! The COOLA Mineral Liplux SPF 30 Organic Tinted Lip gives the perfect pop of color while also protecting your lips from the sun. It’s available in six different shades so you have a color to go with any makeup look!
And, saving the best for last (as per usual)… my favorite sun care find probably ever. The Seriously FAB Zinc it Over Fine + Sheer Sunscreen Facial Mist SPF 25 is GAME CHANGING, and I do not say this lightly! This is a sunscreen mist that your spritz over top of your makeup, making it easy to reapply sunscreen throughout the day without making a total mess of your makeup. It’s made with non-nano zinc oxide and doesn’t give me any white cast whatsoever.
It comes in both a tropical floral scent (which is to die for, I legitimately want a perfume version of this, haha) and an unscented version. The only thing to note is to make sure you either spray this carefully or cover your hair before you mist this all over, because your hair will get greasy looking if you get this in it. A bottle of Zinc It Over is $39 (worth every penny) and you can save 10% with code CHELSEA10!
