I shared a post on my Facebook page the other day that said, “I wonder what it’s like to be able to put your hair in a low ponytail and not look like a founding father” and I don’t know if I’ve ever related to something more, haha. I have a lot of hair, but it’s super fine and the second it goes into any sort of ponytail- high or low- I am officially the owner of the flattest hair in the world. While I still can’t help my fellow flat-haired girls out with the low pony sitch, I do have a couple tricks up my sleeve that’ll help even the finest, flattest hair achieve both texture and fullness when put into a high ponytail!
Meet my secret weapon (or, weapons, rather): the TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairsprays! These hairsprays give you style without stiffness (because who actually likes that crunchy look and feel so many hairsprays give your hair?) and are incredibly lightweight- they don’t leave yucky product build-up in your hair.
There are four different levels of hold available in the Micro Mist:
- Texture (hold level 1, adds more weightless texture to your hair than actual hold)
- Smooth (hold level 2, keeps your style smooth and flexible)
- Boost (hold level 3, great for adding volume that lasts)
- Extend (hold level 4, locks down your style all day without feeling heavy or crunchy)
I used both Texture and Boost for this voluminous high ponytail, and they really do make all the difference!
So, how can you make your hair go from flat to full?
Start by tying off the top section of your hair. I like to section it off approximately at the height I’d like to place my ponytail.
Take the TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray in Boost and spritz it all over the roots of your hair, right below where you’ve sectioned it off. While the hairspray is still wet, use your fingers to scrunch and fluff up the roots a bit. It’s okay if it looks crazy right now- this part helps add volume to the top of your head where fine hair usually looks the most flat. Secure the currently untied section of hair into a high pony.
Untie the top sectioned off piece of your hair and give it an all-over spray with the TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray in Texture. Fine hair tends to be quite soft and silky (both a blessing and a curse), and this spray helps add a little texture and pieceyness (I don’t think that’s a word, but hopefully you know what I mean, haha), which I personally prefer when it comes to high ponytails!
Take the top section of your hair and using another elastic, tie it into the high pony you’ve already created with the lower section of hair. Using two hair ties is a total game-changer, I swear! It allows you to work with the top section of hair as much as you want without messing up the whole ponytail. At this point, start pulling at the top section of hair to loosen it out of the pony a little bit and lift it away from your head to create volume.
When you’re happy with how much volume you’ve got going on, take the TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray in Boost once again and spray it all through where your hair is tied at the elastic, then fluff it up to give it one last bit of oomph!

And there you have it… a super easy voluminous high ponytail for even the flattest, finest of hair! It takes all of two minutes to do and looks super cute all day long. I definitely don’t get nearly this much volume and texture when I do this without product in my hair, so I definitely recommend grabbing the TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairsprays at Walmart ASAP if you want to try this look!
