Moving last month really helped me to organize and clean out my ever-growing makeup stash. While packing, I threw out a ton of old products that were no good anymore and gave away a ton of stuff to friends. Just this week, I went through my stash again and did an even more solid clean out that the first one- I literally tried on every single lip product I had (SO. MANY. LIPSTICKS.) so I could determine what I wasn’t a big fan of and pass them onto a friend, and then that kind of turned into a “try all the things” spree where I ended up with a bunch of other products to give away as well. I have since realized that I need to be more conscious about finishing up some of the products that I do have before being so quick to add more to my collection.
So, when Angela of Raincouver Beauty was gathering a few other bloggers to participate in a Finish 5 By Fall challenge, I was so in. I figured this would be the push that I need to hit pan on some products I’ve been holding onto forever! I started going through my makeup stash for the billionth time, trying to figure out what products I would choose for this challenge. I wanted to keep it semi-realistic- I didn’t want to pick a bright red lipstick or a crazy eyeshadow that I wasn’t going to wear everyday and therefore would never actually finish.
While trying to scope out which products to go with, I realized how many samples and deluxe samples I have of things. Seriously, I feel like I have triples of every Benefit product ever in deluxe sample size because I bought so many of their value packs last year (I’ve cut myself off of them now, don’t worry, haha) and I have so many samples from different monthly beauty boxes I subscribe to. SO- what I have finally decided (I put WAY too much thought into this challenge, hahaha) is that I’m going to use up a ton of samples I’ve had forever. This is a totally realistic goal and I’m going to feel so accomplished when I’m done, haha. Set yourself up for success, friends ;) Instead of choosing five items (because that would be super lame since I’m using sample sizes of things), I chose a few things for five “types” of makeup: primer, face, lips, eyes and fragrance. Here’s what I chose!
I’ve been hoarding these primer samples FOREVER. I have used some of them, so they’re not all entirely brand new, but there’s still a lot to get through. 1x 5ml sample of Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer // 1x 1.5ml sample of Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer // 1x 1.5ml sample of MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Primer (I think this may have been discontinued when they released the Step 1 Skin Equalizers) // 4x 1ml samples of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion // 3x 7.5ml samples of Benefit ‘That Gal’ Brightening Face Primer // 2x 7.5ml samples of Benefit The POREfessional // 1x deluxe sample of Benefit Stay Don’t Stray (I love pairing this with my undereye concealer on days that my dark circles are extra bad)
I chose a super wearable shadow duo, two liners that I use daily and are coming to the end of their life (I figured I’d throw these in here to finish them up), and four deluxe samples of mascaras that I already love (with the exception of Lash Domination which I haven’t tried yet). 1x deluxe sample of bareMinerals READY Shadow 2.0 in The Inspiration // 2x full sized (both half used) MAKE UP FOR EVER Graphic Liners (this is my most fave felt tip liner, for the record- get you some!) // 2x deluxe samples of Benefit They’re Real! Mascara (former HG, so I will have no problem getting through these) // 1x deluxe sample of bareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara // 1x deluxe sample of Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara
I don’t wear foundation super often, so I didn’t want to have to be piling on foundation everyday to finish this challenge, haha. Because of this, I kept face products simple with a foundation sampler (I’ll be able to use 2 shades max from this sampler) and a CC cream that I’ve tried once before and quite like. I also threw in a highlight sample that I’ll use up super quick because I already know it’s stunning, and a bronzer that I own too many deluxe samples of, haha. 2x one-time-use samples of Buxom Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation // 1x 5ml sample of Ole Henriksen Perfect Truth CC Crème // 1x 0.8ml sample of BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal // 1x deluxe sample of Benefit Hoola
Onto the most fun part! I always hold onto lipstick samples but I never use them, simply because I just forget to. It’s about time I’ve used the Dior sampler, because I’ve had that for so long, and I just got the Elizabeth Arden and Urban Decay samplers in beauty boxes over the last couple of months. These are all samples of products I’ve really been wanting to try, so it’s about time, haha. I also threw Benetint in this section- it functions as both a lip and cheek stain, but I just can’t manage a cheek stain without it looking totally stupid and unblended, haha, so I’ll definitely be using this as a lip tint. 4x 2-3x use samples of Dior Addict Fluid Stick // 3x 2-3x use samples of Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick // 2x 2-3x use samples of Urban Decay Revolution High-Color Lipgloss // 1x half-used deluxe sample of Benefit Benetint
Not pictured (because I totally forgot) is a 50ml size of DKNY Be Delicious that I’ve had for like four years and haven’t finished, haha. I love the scent, I just always forget to wear perfume. Now that we’ve moved and I have a whole room as my office/makeup area, I’ve been wearing perfume way more just because I have room to display it somewhere where I’ll see it and remember to wear it. Also, there’s like.. maybe half? of the 50ml left, so this shouldn’t be too hard to get through.
Do you think I’ll be able to do it?! I have high hopes, haha. If you have been thinking about trying to finish up some products in your collection, you should definitely join us in this Finish 5 By Fall challenge! Here are the guidelines:
1. Pick 5 items (extras are okay) that you want to try to use up
2. You have until the first day of fall (September 23, 2015)
to make as much progress as you can
3. Post your final reveal on or around September 23
4. Use #cbbfinish5 to track your progress
Pretty straightforward, right? Let me know if you’re going to participate, and if you post about it as well, leave your link below so I can check it out and it to the list of people participating!
Here are a few other beauty bloggers that are taking the challenge as well, check out their posts to see what they’re trying to finish by fall!
