Going to the London Drugs event last week really rekindled my love for drugstore makeup. I had been using a lot more high end stuff in my everyday routine over the last few months, but have since switched to using a lot of drugstore products that perform surprisingly well. I feel like drugstore brands have REALLY stepped up their game over the last year, or even just over the last few months with some of the new summer product releases they’ve come out with. For example, up until quite recently, there was not a single drugstore mascara that I’d ever tried and completely liked (since discovering what my HGs like Too Faced Better Than Sex and Benefit Roller Lash could do for my invisible lashes)- and then I discovered not just one, but TWO drugstore mascaras that work really well for me (this one and this one). That is one seriously stepped up drugstore game, friends.
Also, it has been HOT here. I mean, it’s no Arizona heat (I just randomly picked a US state that I know is really hot, haha, and I would probably just shrivel up and die in their heat, to be honest), but for Vancouver, it’s been pretty consistently hot for the past two months. In fact, we had the driest May we’ve had in more than seventy years. Now, I’m not complaining at all because I love sunny days and all things related to summer, but the heat does definitely mean that I have to change up my usual makeup routine for something lighter and longer lasting. No one wants to get caught with their face of makeup literally melting off, amiright? Here are some of the best summer drugstore products to keep your makeup on lockdown AND looking gorgeous.
My face is crazy sensitive to products with SPF in them, so I need to be careful with what I use. This SPF 30 face lotion hasn’t caused me any problems and for that, I give it two thumbs up. An SPF base is an absolute MUST (year round!).
I will admit, I am a bit spoiled when it comes to primer because I will generally stick to a high end primer (MAKE UP FOR EVER Step 1 Skin Equalizer for smoothing is my all time favorite, and I’ve been loving the one for redness lately, too)- but, prior to ever trying a high end primer, I was pretty content with a couple different drugstore primers. I have skin that is on the drier side, so I’m not totally sure how this will work for those with oily skin, but the NYX Angel Veil primer always got the job done prior to discovering my MUFE fave.
I rarely wear foundation in summer, just because I don’t like to have a lot of heavy feeling product on my skin when it’s so hot out. With that being said, I still want a little bit of coverage to even out my skin tone, and a BB cream is perfect for this! The Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream is a good one if you are constantly fighting off blemishes during the summer, because it contains 2% salicylic acid to help clear breakouts. The Covergirl Clean Matte BB Cream is a great option for those with oily skin as it helps keep you matte even on the hottest of days! My only qualm with drugstore BB creams is that they generally have an extremely limited color selection, which can sometimes make it difficult to find a match.
I am so impressed with this concealer. When I heard that it was a possible dupe for MAC Pro Longwear Concealer (my holiest of holy grail makeup products), I ran out to grab some to try for myself. It does have very good coverage and doesn’t get all cakey under my eyes like a lot of concealers tend to do with my dry skin. I don’t know if anything will ever be a perfect dupe for my beloved MAC Pro Longwear, but this is definitely a great, affordable concealer.
This isn’t a new or exciting product, but rather a tried and true one that I’ve used for the past few years. It’s cheap, it works really well and that’s that. I use it to set my under eyes and dust it over my t-zone on the rare occasion that my skin gets oily (or if I have used a foundation/BB cream that is too dewy for my liking).
I have had this in my to-try stash for so long and I finally just did the other day. I LOVE this bronzer. I have been so adamant about using only matte bronzers for basically my whole makeup life, because I used to know someone that used this insanely shimmery bronzer all over her entire face and she’d literally be like glittering everywhere, haha. So, needless to say, I was scared off of shimmery bronzers. This bronzer isn’t what I would call shimmery, but just has more of a glow to it than a matte bronzer would. Anyways- it’s gorgeous. It makes for the perfect summer glow!
I LOVE THESE. You need all three. There’s an icy pink, a rose and a golden shade in this trio of illuminators, and they are all amazing in their own ways. The icy pink makes for a gorgeous highlight at the top of your cheekbones and cupids bow, and both the rose and golden shades look amazing underneath or on top of your foundation in place of blush/bronzer. They give the most gorgeous glow and are super blendable. I am honestly obsessed with these.
This stuff seriously works as well as the high end makeup setting sprays I own and for a fraction of the price!
I’ve quickly fallen in love with this super affordable eye pencil. It’s super easy to get a precise line and once it’s set, it’s set. This doesn’t budge on me all day.
I looooove the Maybelline Color Tattoos! There are so many different gorgeous colors, and a shade like Bad To The Bronze would be perfect for everyday wear that won’t slip around on your lids. These are the best- I use them as eyeshadow bases as well to keep my shadows in place all day long.
This is one of the mascaras I was talking about earlier when I said I found two drugstore ones that work great for me. I just recently discovered this one and it’s SO good that I’ve been using it daily (and that says a LOT, because I am ridiculously attached to my HGs, haha). If you haven’t tried this yet, you need to.
These last sooo long on me, I love them! They also have a pretty good selection of colors to choose from, so you can have one for every look you do ;)
