The new year always brings tons of goals, resolutions and a super positive outlook on the months to come, but it often all fades away come February. This year, I’m acknowledging that I am absolutely terrible at following through with a lot of my ideas and plans, and am holding myself accountable to the goals I’ve set. One big goal that I set myself year after year, and not necessarily fail at but also not necessarily follow through with, is taking better care of myself. I want to get outside more, exercise more, eat healthier and just overall take control of my health and wellness.
Here are 4 things I’m doing for my health and wellness right now:
Eating vegetarian for a month
This is one of those ideas that I’ve toyed with for ages and I finally just told myself to stop talking and start doing, so I am now on day 12 of being vegetarian. I definitely don’t have intentions of not eating meat ever again, but I am going to complete the month because I want to prove to myself that I can actually commit to something (instead of spending all my time talking about doing it, haha). The reasoning behind this is that I’ve been considering cutting red meat out of my diet for a long time now (for both environmental and health reasons), so after this month of being vegetarian is done, I think that’s the route I may take.
Cutting back on caffeine
It’s no secret that my caffeine intake directly affects my anxiety levels, but I’ve always just dealt with it because I love coffee so much. Well folks, I am officially cutting back. I am going to make sure to enjoy my morning coffee extra, and then stick to water and caffeine-free teas for the rest of the day. My favorite teas are the herbal teas from Celestial Seasonings. They are so inexpensive, come in tons different flavors and are easy to find at Walmart.
I also love that the brand is dedicated to sustainability! They cut down on waste by having stringless tea bags that come in recycled boxes. Peppermint is my favorite for after a meal, Country Peach Passion is a delicious mid-day treat (also so good over ice) and Honey Vanilla Chamomile is amazing right before bed. These zero calorie swaps that make me feel way better than an overload of caffeine are no-brainers for me!
Getting outside more
Even if that just means taking the dog for an extra long walk, I am getting outside every single day and doing something. Cole and I have had a pretty good routine of going to one of the nearby forest trails and walking the dog there most mornings, so that’s been nice. It’s also been a lot easier to get out to some of the beautiful local parks on his days off with the nice weather we’ve been having!
Doing yoga at home
I still haven’t worked up the courage to join a group class just yet (as I mentioned in my 2019 goals post), but I have been doing Yoga With Adriene at home. I’m currently doing the 30 day Dedicate program, and I’ll move onto another one of her programs after that. Her videos are so great and I always feel awesome after having completed one!
These are all such simple lifestyle changes that are making a big impact on how I feel day to day. I definitely think a lifestyle change is the best way to go about getting lasting results when it comes to health and fitness, because diets never last and rarely do strict workout regimens (not for me, at least!). I’m looking forward to continuing through the rest of the year with these healthy habits!
Do you have any health/wellness goals for this year?
