Tip One: Pinpoint the Darkest Areas
Take a walk through your home, making a mental note as to which areas are the dingiest. Make these your primary targets and carefully consider why these spaces in particular are so dark.
Tip Two: Use Rich Neutrals and Whites in Your Decor
If your home feels cold and uninspiring, using neutral colours such as mushroom grey, camel tan, espresso brown and warm rust will help to add depth. These will make a particularly striking impression when placed next to white.
Tip Three: Introduce Recessed Lighting Fixtures
Prevent your dark ceilings or wood panelled ceilings from making the room feel like a cave by adding some simple spotlighting, thus lightening the room’s appearance.
Tip Four: Choose Light Finishes
Dark coloured kitchen cabinets combined with flooring in a similar hue can narrow the kitchen and make it appear smaller than it really is. To prevent this from being the case, choose lighter cabinet fronts, worktops or other finishing touches such as doorknobs or handles.
Tip Five: Consider Pendant Lighting Fixtures
A granite breakfast bar or shadowy corner table can be instantly lightened by the addition of pendant light fixtures which hang from the ceiling. Better yet, they add interest and depth to the room.
Tip Six: Bring Soft Lighting into the Bedroom
Under cabinet lighting, LED lights in built-in display units or table lamps all work wonders for creating an airy, bright feel in your bedroom.
Tip Seven: Use Contrasts
Why not create a contrast by adding some brightly coloured accessories to darker rooms? It will cheer the space up in an instant.
Tip Eight: Introduce Mirrors
It’s handy to remember that areas such as narrow hallways, closets and landings can all be made to appear larger in an instant by the addition of a mirror. Not only will the mirror add depth, but it will also lend an elegant, sophisticated air to the room.
Tip Nine: Consider DIY
A really small, sombre-colored room may still appear dingy even after you have made the changes suggested above. In this case, it might be time for a more radical transformation. Could you benefit, for instance, from a new color scheme?
Tip Ten: Make the Most of Natural Light
Assess the windows in your house. Do they need a thorough clean inside and out? Are the curtains you are using allowing sufficient natural light through?
By following even just some of these ideas, you should be able to brighten up your home relatively quickly. Enjoy!
