It’s finally BBQ season… hoooooray! With BBQ season inevitably comes a delicious cocktail (or two), and you best believe I’m already on top of perfecting my cocktail skills for this upcoming summer. My drink of choice so far this year has been a good ol’ Canadian classic: a Caesar. Caesars are definitely one of those drinks that you either love or hate, there’s no middle ground. For Cole and I, it’s definitely a love. In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, a Caesar is a spicy, savory cocktail that quenches your thirst (and a little bit of your hunger) on a hot summer’s day like no other cocktail does.
Please bear with me while I tell you that a Caesar is made with clamato juice. If you’re not yet cringing, clamato juice is a mix of clam juice and tomato juice, and it’s becoming more available in the US as Caesar’s gain a little more traction outside of Canada. I promise that clamato juice doesn’t taste fishy or clammy, and if the idea of a drink made with tomato juice totally freaks you out, I again promise you that even as a tomato juice disliker myself, I love Caesars.
Let’s just get into the recipe so you can try it for yourself!
The 1-2-3-4-5 Caesar
Start by running a slice of lime around the rim of your glass, and then rim it with celery salt. Fill the glass about 1/2 – 3/4 full of ice, depending on how much ice you like in your drinks.
Next, follow the 1-2-3-4-5 rule for an easy-peasy Caesar that tastes just right:
1 – 1.5 oz vodka
2 dashes of tabasco sauce (or hot sauce)
3 shakes of salt and pepper (each)
4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
5 oz of clamato juice (or tomato juice, but it’s definitely better with clamato)
Note: I doubled the recipe when I was making it for this post, because the milk bottles I was using are fairly big.
And now for the most fun part, garnishing! Some people get really crazy with their Caesar garnishes. There is a restaurant here in Vancouver called Score On Davie and they have a $60 Caesar called the Checkmate, which has roasted chicken, a burger, a pulled pork slider, onion rings, chicken wings, a mac and cheese hotdog AND a brownie on it. Ummm… what? That is a little much for my personal preference, but I do like to play around with different garnishes on my Caesars.
My most recent favorite garnish are the Mezzetta Pickled Imported Golden Greek Peperoncinis. They are a pickled hot pepper, and the flavor of them is an absolute match made in heaven for a Caesar! You can make all sorts of different garnish combos, but a Mezzetta Peperoncini (or two, if I feel like a snack with my Caesar, haha) and a stalk of celery is my perfect combination.
Other delicious garnish options are the Mezzetta Super Colossal Spanish Queen Olives (so, so good) or the Hot Chili Peppers from Mezzetta, if you are a fan of a bit of spiciness in your drinks!
To kick things up a notch (in case the peppers aren’t already doing it for you), Mezzetta is hosting a Bold, Bright Summer Giveaway until July 15th, 2016! Here are the details:
