how to save money by shopping online

In the past couple of years, I have become a huge fan of online shopping for the sole reason of how much money you can save by shopping online instead of in store. I pride myself on being thrifty and saving every penny I can when I purchase things, so today I have a few tips to share with you on how you can save money by shopping online.

1. Sign up to store mailing lists
Yes, getting these emails can often be annoying, but they can also save you huge percentages off your total when you checkout. Sites like Forever21, Charlotte Russe, Cotton On and many others will send out emails every time they have a big sale going on- so you know when to get the most bang for your buck! Often you will receive a coupon code upon signing up for these mailing lists as well, to save you anywhere from 10% to 30% or even more off your first purchase.
2. Shop during sales
It is tempting to buy items the moment they hit the {virtual} shelves, but often these pricey items will end up in the sale section after a couple of months. If you have your eye on something that you aren’t 100% sure you are in love with, or may be a trendy item that will soon pass, wait a month or two and watch the sale section for this item. It also gives you a chance to evaluate whether you actually wanted that bodycon leopard print dress or if it was just a passing fad.
3. Buy at the end of a season
As soon as seasons get near transition time, everything from the previous season WILL go on sale. Stores want to get rid of their stock, because who is going to buy a winter coat when people are dreaming of bikinis? Stores want to clear out this inventory to make room for all of their new goods. This is a great time to stock up on classic, timeless pieces (avoid trendy items as it is very likely you won’t love them nearly as much in a year’s time) that will still be as great next year.
4. Use coupon codes
This is probably my number one tip for shopping online. More often than not, you can use coupon codes alongside already hugely discounted sale prices…sometimes making certain items cost you $1.75 or $3. I recently purchased multiple pairs of colored/printed skinnies from Bluenotes online for $7 each. You don’t get those kinds of prices without coupons! Now you’re wondering…what if I don’t have any coupon codes? Luckily there are websites that are dedicated to this. I usually just Google “forever21.com coupon code” and check the first couple links that come up. I try any coupon codes that have been recently added. The worst thing that can happen is none of them work… best thing is that you save your big cash money!
Hopefully these tips help you all save a bit, I know during the Black Friday online sales last year I saved hundreds by implementing all of these tips. Let me know if I missed any great ways that you save by online shopping!

I always google to see if the store I’m buying from has a working coupon code. Doesn’t always work but it’s usually worth a try!! You have to be careful looking for sales online though because some stores (ahem, Gap, Old Navy, Loft) will have better sales in stores than online! Always good to check ;)

I never shop on line, but I think I’ll start when I move out of state. I’m not going to have friends to shop with for a while! This will come in very handy.
